13th May General Meeting.

In October 1982, following the end of the Falklands conflict No. 29 Squadron detached nine Phantom FGR-2 aircraft to RAF Stanley, where they assumed responsibility for the air defence of the Falkland Islands. Over the course of the unit's
time in the South Atlantic, the original personnel from No. 29 Squadron returned to the UK to be replaced by personnel from other Phantom squadrons. This turnover personnel led to the unit becoming officially referred to as simply ‘Phandet’ (short for
Phantom Detachment) until, in March 1983, No. 23 Squadron Phantom’s officially took up the role. No. 23 Squadron remained in the Falklands until October 1988,
after which it returned to the UK. Its role as the main air defence unit in the Falklands was taken up by No. 1435 Flight.
Former RAF Phantom Technician Clive Hammond has kindly agreed to talk to Society members about his experience of a ‘Phandet’. He will take us on a journey to the Falklands via RAF Hercules transport followed by the experience of living and
maintaining a complex fighter jet in sometimes very harsh conditions.
17th June General Meeting 7pm - 8:30pm

Come and watch an amazing talk (Video) by Major Brian Shul as he tells the story of his amazing career leading up to flying SR-71 Blackbird.

Brian Shul was a USAF Vietnam war attack pilot who went on to pilot the SR71 Blackbird.
He flew 212 combat missions and was shot down flying a T-28 Trojan near the end of the Vietnam war. He was so badly burned that he was not expected to live. He returned to full flight status, flying the SR-71 Blackbird.
Major Shul completed a 20-year career in the Air Force. He wrote four books on aviation and
ran a photo studio in Marysville, California, until his death in Reno, Nevada.
